Weyburn council approved a request from Weyburn resident Ryan Birnie to again set up a neighbourhood ice rink on Gordon Miles Place for the winter months, as per the terms of a signed agreement with the City.

The agreement is essentially the same one that was in place for the rink last winter, for the rink using the park area on the east end of Gordon Miles Place.

The rink uses a set of prefab modular rink boards provided by Birnie, and uses water supplied by a water truck with netting to help prevent pucks from flying into neighbours’ back yards.

The agreement originally stipulated a closing time of 9:30 p.m. in the evening, but Coun. Dick Michel suggested with the city’s noise bylaw allowing activity until 11, the agreement was amended to allow for rink use until 10 p.m., and Zamboni usage to end a half-hour later.

Student representative Landon Field said from a youth’s point of view, he supported extending the time allowed on the rink until 10 p.m.

The agreement also indicates that Birnie shall reimburse the city should any repairs be needed to city property as a result of having the rink in the park all winter.

• City council was advised that nominations are now open for the City of Weyburn’s Walk of Fame, with the chosen names to be installed next June during the annual Weyburn Car Club’s show-and-shine downtown.

Coun. Michel said the committee is now taking applications for 2019 to recognize residents for outstanding achievements in one of the categories set by the committee.

According to the criteria set for this award, nominees must have lived in the City of Weyburn or surrounding area for a minimum of five years at any point during the individual’s lifetime, and consider the city an important part of their life experience. Nominees must have made significant contributions to the national or global landscape in athletics, arts and entertainment, academics, humanitarianism, medicine, science and technology, business and industry, or have made some other outstanding contribution to the community.

Application forms are available on the City of Weyburn’s website at www.weyburn.ca, under “community links”.

• Council approved a tender for upgrades to plant 200 at the City of Weyburn’s reservoir and water treatment plant on 16th Street.

A total of six tenders for the project were submitted, and the tender was awarded to Clark’s Supply and Service of Moose Jaw, in the amount of $866,500, plus a contingency allowance of $80,000.

Work on this part of the project is to start 10 days after acceptance of the tender, and is to be completed within a six-month (180 days) time.

• Council gave second and final reading to three proposals for rezoning in the City.

One proposal is for DSI Contracting, to rezone a parcel from Highway Commercial to Medium Industrial, as the company is in the process of developing a new contractor shop and yard for a new lease holder business, just south of First Avenue on Queen Street and Regina Avenue.

The second proposal is from Minard’s Leisure World, to rezone a parcel from Urban Holdings to Highway Commercial, in order for the business to expand their operations west of Government Road South, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

The third was a proposal by Darcy Pridgeon, who wants to subdivide a lot on Second Ave. SW, to sell them as new mobile home lots. The lot was rezoned from Urban Holding to Residential Mobile Home.
