Weyburn City Council approved changes to the Weyburn Builds Infill Grant Program which expands funding eligibility for new constructions in the city and better encourages the revitalization of older neighbourhoods.

The Weyburn Builds Program allows owners of new home builds, or RTMS moved in, to apply for a reduction of 75 per cent in property taxes for up to three years. The program also offers a grant amount of $50 per thousand dollars on approved construction value of major exterior renovations or additions to existing homes (minimum value of $5,000).

At its April 26 meeting, council voted 7-0 in favour of the following changes to the program to expand the eligibility and increase local revitalization:

• Expand the list of applicable new construction builds from just single family dwellings to include duplex dwelling units as well as semi-detached dwelling units.

• Require dwellings, or empty lot construction, be a minimum of 25 years old in order to qualify for the program, to better encourage revitalization of older neighborhoods.

“By approving these updates to the Weyburn Builds program, our Council is taking action to encourage revitalization and new development in our community,” said Mayor Marcel Roy. “Our hope is these changes will provide a boost to the local economy, through the use of local labour and materials, and improve the beauty of Weyburn.”
