A driver faces several Criminal Code charges after an incident where a driver hit two Weyburn police cruisers and tried running one of the officers over in the early morning hours on Sunday.

Members of the Weyburn Police Service located a suspect vehicle parked at the east Weyburn location of 7-Eleven store at approximately 1:39 a.m. on Dec. 16. The vehicle and driver were wanted in connection with and as part of an ongoing investigation into an incident earlier in the evening for flight from police.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle from leaving the parking lot, the suspect vehicle rammed a Weyburn Police Service vehicle and then attempted to run over the officer when he exited the police vehicle to arrest the driver.

A second Weyburn Police Service vehicle on scene was struck head-on, in what appears to be an intentional act by the accused driver as he attempted to flee the area on Millar Road.

One Weyburn Police Service vehicle sustained minor damage. The suspect vehicle and the other Weyburn Police Service vehicle involved in the collision sustained major damage.

The driver and lone occupant of the suspect vehicle was taken into custody without further incident and is facing several Criminal Code charges. The matter is still under investigation at this time.

The accused driver was transported to Weyburn Police Service cells and was examined by Weyburn EMS. The officer of the second vehicle was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital with minor injuries and was later released.

No further updates will be provided until Monday.
