The Weyburn Fair is set to roll out six days of activities and attractions at the Weyburn exhibition grounds from Sunday, June 30 to Saturday, July 6, with new features like axe-throwing and bull-fighting.

There will be lots of favourite events, such as the Souris River Rodeo, the midway, the regional 4-H show, chuckwagon races and the demolition derby, which by tradition is the closing event for the Fair.

The week kicks off on June 30, with achievement day competitions for local 4-H clubs, a 4-H horse show, and a movie night starting at 8 p.m. The 4-H competitions get fully underway on Canada Day, July 1, along with chuckwagon and chariot races at 6 p.m. at the grandstands, and a second movie night at 8 p.m.

The 4-H competitions continue on July 2, with a second night of chuckwagons at 6 p.m., and the 4-H sale and winners of the competitions taking place on Wednesday, July 3.

The highlight on July 4 will be the Chamber parade, which will get underway at 10:30 a.m. from its starting point on Fifth Avenue and Fifth Street, with a new route that will divert the parade away from the new school construction by going down Windsor Street.

The parade will wind its way through the downtown area as normal, heading south on Third Street from the Court House down to Railway Avenue, and then up on Second Street to Bison Avenue, and it will end at Government Road.

The midway will start up at noon at the fair grounds, and a new feature for fair-goers will be the Lumberjax Axe-Throwing, which will be open at 5 and 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. It will cost you $5 for 15 throws, and organizers ask that those interested wear closed-toe shoes, no sandals or heels or other forms of open-toe footwear.

The Xtreme Bull Fighters and Rank Mini Ponies will also be featured on July 4, with a show at 7 p.m. at the grandstands.

The midway rides will be provided by Canuck Amusements, and there will be other features, including a petting zoo and food vendors on the grounds.

The Souris River Rodeo will start on Friday, July 5, and go to Saturday, July 6. Slack action will start at 11 a.m. on Friday with the main performance at 6 p.m., and on Saturday, the DQ Kids Rodeo will start at 9 a.m., and the main rodeo performance gets underway at 1 p.m.

The second annual Smoker Cook-off will be held on July 5 and 6, with three meat categories, including beef brisket, chicken thighs and pulled pork, plus a surprise side dish that will be revealed 24 hours before the start of competition.

The Fair ends with the Rumble in the Ring demolition derby, starting at 6 p.m. in front of the grandstands.

In addition to the cars smashing things up, this year’s event will feature a minivan mash-up, and the favourite lawnmower races will also be held at intermission time.

The Weyburn Ag Society would also appreciate the assistance of volunteers if anyone might be able to provide a few hours to help out. If you are able to help out, call the Ag Society office.
