“We will be making more this weekend and next weekend. All proceeds go to the fund. Cookies are by the dozen and it’s by donation,” she said, noting that so far they have made 66 dozen.

“We just want to thank everyone for their support by donating to this amazing fund. Streamline also gave us a generous donation,” said Moule.

The Mending Little Hearts fund allows donors to make directed donations toward addressing the unmet needs of children living with heart conditions from all across Saskatchewan.

Your contributions will improve the health, wellbeing, and survival of these children by providing additional equipment for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of their conditions; establishing educational resources for these children and their families; developing support services for these families at the time of diagnosis and procedures; and allowing a child and family to attend the highly successful annual CHAMPS summer camp.

The Children’s Healthy-Heart Activity Monitoring Program in Saskatchewan – or CHAMPS Camp, is a program for children between the ages of 7 and 17 years with congenital or acquired heart disease.

CHAMPS brings children with cardiac conditions together in a supportive, safe environment that encourages them to build their confidence in physical activity participation and mental wellness.

The camp is funded primarily through the Mending Little Hearts Fund of Saskatchewan. There are also numerous sponsors throughout the year who help make the program possible.

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is a leading type of birth defect – and an increasing number of these children are living into adulthood as a result of advances in surgical interventions. However, children with CHD are predisposed to developing modifiable risk factors later in life such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

Cardiac rehabilitation programs for adults are well established non-pharmacological treatments for individuals with various cardiac conditions. Yet, there is little research to show the effectiveness and feasibility of a pediatric physical activity and psychological wellness program.

The research team of the Mending Little Hearts Fund is made up of doctors and researchers from the College of Kinesiology, College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and the Department of Psychology at the University of Regina. The research team contributes to and helps facilitate programming at CHAMPS Camp, in addition to numerous research initiatives outside of camp involving children, youth, and adults with CHD.
