The Weyburn Police Association (WPA) ratified a renewal of its collective bargaining agreement with the City of Weyburn and its Board of Police Commissioners. The three-year deal includes wage increases and clarity around workplace injuries.
“For the Association, the main goal of negotiations is to ensure our members receive similar benefits when compared to other police associations across the province,” said Const. Darcy Cleasby, president of WPA.
“The respectful, professional and swift negotiations for this agreement represent a growth in the relationship between the Association and the City.”
WPA members will be getting a 5.8 per cent wage increase over three years (1.65 per cent in 2021, 1.85 per cent in 2022 and 2.3 per cent in 2023). Terms of the agreement will run retroactively to Jan. 1, 2021 as negotiations were postponed to Feb. 11, 2021 due to the municipal election in November 2020.
The agreement also includes clarity of certain terms and conditions, such as Worker Compensation Benefits. The new agreement was signed May 3, and wages were based on comparisons to other Saskatchewan police associations.
“In Weyburn, we have a police service that believes in the motto ‘Working Together for a Safer Community,’ and this was reflected in the professionalism that members on the bargaining team took,” said Ron McCormick, chair of the Board of Police Commissioners.
“Both sides worked collaboratively to come up with a contract that best serves the needs of our community’s police officers and the City of Weyburn. The contract ensures continued dedication by members in keeping Weyburn safe for all citizens as we move forward.”
Weyburn Police Association represents 20 members who are sworn police officers of the Weyburn Police Service and are affiliated with the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers (SFPO) and the Canadian Police Association (CPA).
Weyburn Board of Police Commissioners is a City of Weyburn governing body made up of the Mayor, two elected officials and three members of the community who work in consultation with the Chief of Police to establish objectives and priorities of the Weyburn Police Service, and negotiate and approve collective bargaining agreements.
