The City of Weyburn encourages residents and organizations to participate in Wey-Clean Week, on May 10-14, to show your concern for the environment and improve the community.

The City believes that tackling litter and properly disposing of waste are simple actions that residents can take to make the community a safer and more attractive place to live, play and work.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, this 2021 campaign encourages family or small group participation in neighbourhoods. The City is highlighting different neighbourhoods each day of the week, using its garbage collection areas:

• May 10 – City crews focusing city-wide; May 11 – Area 1; May 12 – Area 2; May 13 – Area 3, 4 and 5; May 14 – Downtown.

The City encourages residents to walk the streets in their neighbourhood areas and pickup litter.

The City also hopes residents will take part in the 2021 Wey-Clean contest, and show community pride. To take part, tag the City on social media to have your name entered to win a City of Weyburn prize package.

Each post must include 1. A photo or description of your cleanup efforts; 2. Tag @cityofweyburn; and 3. Hashtag #weycleanweek

The deadline to enter is Sunday, May 16, 2021.

There is also the Wey-Clean Week Bingo that residents can take part in for fun, with the card found on the City’s website.

Public garbage cans will be located in all city-owned parks. GFL will also be setting up roll off bins in each area to dispose of the garbage you collect. These include on First Avenue near Zion Lutheran Church; on 13th Street in the Jubilee Park parking lot; on Coteau Avenue near Haig School; on 17th Street near the SaskTel warehouse; and on Fifth Avenue South, near Souris School.

The designated public spaces with city garbage bins, which the Youth Council encourages residents to explore and clean-up, include Tatagwa Trails, City of Weyburn public parks, and the Souris River bank (dispose litter in closest public bin; contact the Parks Department for pick-up of litter collected in bags ONLY).

In accordance with Saskatchewan Health Authority guidelines, participants are encouraged to clean up as individuals or in small groups of people from the same household. Please maintain a distance of two metres between people and no more than 10 people in the area at a time.

Those choosing to participate should also follow these additional guidelines provided by the local public health authority: No mass gatherings (2-3 people max is strongly encouraged); if children are participating, ensure adult supervision; no “wind-up” or smaller activities shall be held; communication will be done electronically to maintain physical distance.

Proper equipment including gloves, masks, closed-toed shoes, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, pickers, sticks, brooms and dustpans should be used. Participants collecting litter in their neighbourhood along sidewalks and back alleys can dispose of it with the household garbage in their refuse cart.

The Weyburn Youth Council encourages downtown businesses to clean up outside their properties. Litter can be disposed in the public bins located around downtown. Disposal of large items in public bins is prohibited; the focus of the Weyburn Youth Council cleanup campaign is on litter.

Do not touch hazardous waste or sharp objects such as needles. Please phone the Weyburn Fire Department at (306) 848-3240 for assistance.

If your community organization would like to get involved in the Wey-Clean Week initiative, call (306) 848-3221 or email the City at kpaul@weyburn.ca.
