Weyburn Review wins 9 SWNA awards

The Weyburn Review placed well in the annual awards competition for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA), presented at the association’s annual convention on April 6.

The Weyburn Review placed well in the annual awards competition for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA), presented at the association’s annual convention on April 6.

In the 2019 General Excellence Awards, the Review won third place for Best Overall Paper in its circulation class, and third for Best Front Page.

For the 2019 Premier Awards, the newspaper took home three first-place awards, including for Best Business Writing, for a story on the state of the oil industry in Western Canada, written by Greg Nikkel.

In the photography category, Nikkel won first place for Best Hard News Photo, for a photo from the Mryglod Steel fire (as shown above), and was named Photographer of the Year. This entry included the selection of photos shown above.

He also took second place for Best Black and White photo, for a time-lapse photo using light, and second place for Best K-12 Education Coverage for a single story, and second place for Best Saskatchewan Arts or Cultural Series of Stories, for a series on the TheatreFest event hosted in Weyburn by the Crocus 80 Theatre group.

Nikkel also won third place for Best Post-Secondary Education coverage.
