Weyburn’s Travelling Book Bag brings the joy of reading to your door

Are you looking for a new way of refreshing your reading material without adding to your already overstuffed bookshelf? The Travelling Book Bag is making its way around Weyburn.

Are you looking for a new way of refreshing your reading material without adding to your already overstuffed bookshelf? The Travelling Book Bag is making its way around Weyburn. The Book Bag started with Leslie Robertson, who came up with the idea while purging her own bookshelf this spring.

“My husband and I are both avid readers, so when we married a year and a half ago, we found that we had more books than bookshelves. My mother, who passed away two years ago, was also an avid reader and I inherited many of her treasured books. Even when she was living in long term care, she took advantage of the book delivery service from our local library”, said Robertson.

“As I move more toward audio and digital books, I have been purging my physical bookshelves. This has been hard at times, because I have such a deep love of literature. Both my parents were teachers by profession, and writers and poets by passion, so the written word was almost sacred in our home. You would never, ever throw out a book.”

The Travelling Book Bag has 10 books in it. The recipient of the bag simply chooses the books they wish to keep, and exchanges them for books they are finished with. All books are to be sanitized before repacking the washable mesh bag.

“We want to keep in mind the current guidelines and COVID-19 restrictions when passing the bag, so sanitizing is a priority. I am available to pick up and deliver the bag in a safe manner, which will depend on the individual’s needs. I’ve offered this as many of our members do not know each other and others are isolating or under quarantine. We need to remember to pass the bag with no, or very little, contact. I have in mind to start a second bag soon, as well as a teen/tween bag.”

The Facebook group, Travelling Book Bag (Weyburn), is welcoming new members from Weyburn and immediate area. Robertson can be reached through the group for more information.
