Youth mission to help out and ‘serve’ the city and area

Over 250 teens aged 12 to 18 will converge on Weyburn from July 7-13 to “love on” the community, by helping out and serving people, including putting on two different camps for youth to enjoy.

Over 250 teens aged 12 to 18 will converge on Weyburn from July 7-13 to “love on” the community, by helping out and serving people, including putting on two different camps for youth to enjoy.

The youth are coming from 20 different churches from across Western Canada, and will be part of SERVE 2019, a mission of Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, hosted by Calvary Baptist Church of Weyburn.

The teens will be kept active and busy throughout their stay in Weyburn, as they help put on a sports camp and a Kidz Day Camp, hold a city-wide food drive, and they will helping a long list of city and area groups and organization with jobs they need doing, or events they want to put on.

The sports camp will run on July 8-9 and 11-12 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day on the east side of Jubilee Park. This camp is aimed at youth who are going into Grades 5 and 6 this fall, and the sessions will be led by qualified teachers with students supervising the practices and games.

The camp will see the children try a variety of sports in that time period, including pickleball, soccer, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee golf, hip hop, tennis, stretching and more. The cost for this camp is $20 per person, which covers the cost of lunches.

The Kidz Day Camp will run from July 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon each day, and is free to take part in, with a freewill offering available.

The day camp is open to children from age four up to Grade 5, and it will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, led by a group of teens from Victoria, B.C.

Some of the projects and groups the teens will be helping during their stay in Weyburn include doing yard work or painting for seniors; sorting and cleaning items at the Salvation Army’s thrift store; helping with children’s programs at the Weyburn Public Library; a community barbecue will be held on the east side of Jubilee Park near the parking lot from 10 a.m. to noon during the sports camp, and a barbecue will be held for Calvary Baptist on the Co-op community deck on Thursday, July 11 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Students will also do music, leisure services or holding church services for seniors at care homes such as Hilltop Manor, Crocus Villa and New Hope Pioneer Manor in Stoughton.

Other activities include holding a community free car wash on the fair grounds in front of the Curling Museum It will take place on Thursday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to noon, and on Friday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The youths will also be doing construction, painting and cleaning at Calvary Baptist; spreading crushed rock at the Free Methodist Church; helping with various projects at the Wor-Kin Shop; doing food prep and painting a mural at the Souls Harbour Mission in Regina and doing food prep at the Souls Harbour Mission in Moose Jaw; cleaning and painting at the Weyburn Youth Center, and weight, bagging and sorting of grains and lentils for the food bank, as well as holding a city-wide food drive on Thursday, July 11. Teens will be going door-to-door to pick up food donations in Weyburn, McTaggart  and Yellow Grass from 1-4 p.m. If a resident won’t be at home at that time, they can leave non-perishable food in a bag labeled “food drive” in the driveway or on the doorstep.

The idea of all of the community service is, first, to let the community that Jesus cares about them, and to learn leadership skills as well as the importance of giving back to the community. They will partner with other groups, such as the Free Methodist Church for putting on an evening worship service, and having meals and sleeping at St. Michael School.
