Police investigate bike thefts, scam calls

City police have received reports of stolen bicycles. Bicycles have also been located whose owners are unknown. Bicycle licences can be purchased at the Weyburn Police Service for $5 for the lifetime of the bicycle.

City police have received reports of stolen bicycles. Bicycles have also been located whose owners are unknown. Bicycle licences can be purchased at the Weyburn Police Service for $5 for the lifetime of the bicycle. Police are encouraging citizens to assure their cycles are secure. Anyone with information about those responsible for theft of bicycles in Weyburn is encouraged to contact Weyburn Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

Residents have been receiving scam phone calls where the caller states they have won $100,000 or a vehicle in the STARS lottery. They are then asked to pay money for a tow fee and administration fee and that police and media would attend to see them. Citizens are asked not to provide any personal information or any monetary funds in relation to these calls.

Police observed a gathering of people on the Government road bridge on June 24 at approximately 2:30 a.m. When police stopped to see what the group was up to, it was noticed that there had been damage done to a city planter. While on scene, a 24-year-old male jumped off of the bridge into the water. As a result, the male sustained minor injuries.

Police were able to get male out of the water and was arrested for drunk in public and released without charges. Investigation continues into the mischief to the city planter. Police strongly advise against this type of activity as it could have resulted in very serious injury or death of a person involved due to the dangers in the water.

Police received a report on June 24 that a resident’s silver Dodge Ram truck parked on South Hill was spray-painted with profanities and inappropriate drawings. If anyone has any information about this occurrence, they are encouraged to contact crime stoppers or the Weyburn Police Service.

Police received a report on June 24 that a male was observed in his doorway with his pants down, private parts exposed and masturbating. Consequently, the 32-year-old male was charged under section 173(1)(b) Criminal Code of Canada for an indecent act.

Police received a report that a passenger in a vehicle with four teenage males threw a firecracker at a young female on June 26 around 9:35 p.m. The female was not injured and matter is under investigation.

Police received a report of a motor vehicle accident at the corner of Prairie Avenue and Government Road on June 27. After the investigation was completed, a 16-year-old female driver was charged with proceeding from a stop sign before it was safe. There were no injuries.

City police received a report of small children driving a battery-powered jeep across a busy street on June 28. Police attended and spoke to guardians about safety concerns and not allowing children to drive on the roadway.

Police attended a local liquor establishment in relation to a domestic dispute between staff on June 28, however the matter resolved itself before police arrival and no further action was required.

Police attended a local liquor establishment on June 29 to assist staff with an intoxicated patron who refused to leave. A 32-year-old male was arrested for being intoxicated in public. He was lodged in cells until he sobered and no charges resulted.

City police were dispatched to a domestic disturbance on June 30, which led to the arrest of a 41-year-old male for assault on two females, aged 18 and 39.  Investigation into the accused revealed that he was on multiple pre-exisiting probation orders. As a result, he received five breach charges between the two probation orders resulted.  Four of these were for failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and one breach charge of an order for no contact with the 39-year-old victim if he had consumed alcohol within preceding 12 hours. The male was held for court.

Police attended a local residence and assisted a family who was having a verbal disagreement on June 30. Officers helped mediate the situation and police left without incident.

City police attended a motor vehicle accident on July 1 where a 16-year-old male struck a pole on a local business parking lot causing extensive damage. Investigation revealed that sun glare was a factor in the accident.

An officer on patrol located a motorist who was driving through and in front of traffic after the fireworks on July 1. Consequently, at 17-year-old male was charged with driving without reasonable consideration for others under the Traffic Safety Act, thereby receiving a $280 fine or option to attend court in August.
