Police warn residents of ongoing scams

The Weyburn Police Service received calls about a number of telephone scams this past week, many of which were CRA tax scams. The police noted that CRA does not call and threaten people over the phone.

The Weyburn Police Service received calls about a number of telephone scams this past week, many of which were CRA tax scams. The police noted that CRA does not call and threaten people over the phone. If anyone receives such a call, it will be a scam. A new letter scam was identified where a person received a letter regarding an unclaimed insurance policy.

• Weyburn Police Service received a report on Thursday of a historical sexual assault having occurred in another province. The Weyburn police will be providing assistance to the other police service in this investigation.

• City police are receiving numerous calls from owners of private property regarding unauthorized vehicles parking on the property. Police note that it is an offence under the city bylaw to park a vehicle on private property without permission. The owner can call the police to have a parking ticket issued and can also have the vehicle(s) towed from their property.

The police ask residents to be respectful of private property when looking for a place to park. Just because a business may seem closed does not give the general public the right to park there indiscriminately.

• Weyburn policereceived a report that a family member took a vehicle from the property without the consent of the owner on May 1. The matter is still under investigation and charges are pending.

• City policereceived a report of a vehicle collision near the Comp Schoolat about 3 p.m. on May 1. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

• Weyburn police received a call regarding a domestic dispute at about 3:10 pm. on May 1. The matter was mediated without the need for further involvement.

• City police were called to a residence to deal with a family domestic issue on Wednesday. The matter was mediated for the time being with referrals to other agencies that may better assist the family.

• Police were called to the local hospital to deal with an unruly patient on Wednesday. The presence of the police was sufficient to convince the patient to calm down and continue with the assessment and treatment.

• Weyburn police conducted a traffic stop at about 1:50 a.m. on Thursday. As a result of the stop the vehicle driver was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. The vehicle passenger was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine.

• City police came across a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at about 11:45 p.m. on Thursday. The male driver was found to have been consuming alcohol and also was in possession of marijuana. A 60-day licence suspension was issued along with the vehicle being impounded for three days.

• While on patrol on Saturday, a member of the Weyburn police came across a vehicle that was being driven in a reckless manner. Two tickets were issued, for failing to stop for a stop sign, and driving without due care and attention.
