Catherine “Kay” Morton, nee Broughton of Weyburn, SK, formerly Griffin, SK, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at the age of 100 years. Kay was predeceased by her parents, A.E. (Ted) and Alice Broughton; husband, George Morton; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Ada Morton; brothers and sisters: Edwin, Allan “Cap”, John, Edward “Ned”, Walter, Bob Broughton, Edna “Tommy” Nordine, Lucy MacKay, Betty Anseth and Christine “Toots” Laing. Catherine “Kay” was born north of Kisbey, SK on June 5, 1917 to Alfored and Alice Broughton. She moved to Creelman with her family at an early age and attended Creelman School from grade one to twelve, graduating in 1935. Catherine attended Normal School in Regina from 1935 to 1936, teaching for two years before marrying George Morton, secretary of the R.M. of Griffin in 1937. For two years during the war Catherine went back to teaching in Griffin. The next 16 years she spent in her home and eventually returning to teaching in 1957. In 1977 Catherine retired from teaching and enjoyed her retirement years in Griffin. George and Catherine moved to Weyburn. She had many interests including education, reading, gardening, crocheting, bowling, curling, golfing and card games. With her husband, George, much time was spent entertaining family and friends at their cottage at White Bear Lake. She was a member of the Grace United Church, Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan, and supported many charities. Kay will be lovingly remembered by her four grandsons: Stewart (Brenda) Morton of Kelowna, BC, Peter Morton of Osgoode, ON, Doug Morton of Nepean, ON, Barry Morton of Toronto, ON; one granddaughter: Rhonda Morton (Stephen Hope) of Kemptville, ON; four great grandchildren, Mischa (Pavlova), Shalana (Brent), Trace and Rhys as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives. A Private Family Service and Interment for Catherine was held Saturday, September 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Griffin Cemetery, Griffin.
