City continues to be the best place

It is no exaggeration to say that things are happening in Weyburn right now, many of them good things, and it isn’t just because this is one of the busiest times of the entire year.

It is no exaggeration to say that things are happening in Weyburn right now, many of them good things, and it isn’t just because this is one of the busiest times of the entire year. There is economic activity going on in and around Weyburn that would belie the perception that the economy is still in a slump.
The level of construction going on around the city is one of the busiest it has been in many years. One of the biggest projects underway is the construction of the new elementary school, Legacy Park, and the Weyburn Recreation and Culture Centre on Fifth Street, on the former location of the Weyburn Junior High School.
This a two-year construction project, and the buildings are taking form as the steel beams and roof trusses are put into place, giving people a fairly good idea of the size and shape that this structure will take.
Another major long-term project has just finished, the city’s new reservoir and equipment in the water filtration plant, and the completion was celebrated on Friday with a tour of the plant.
This plant provides the safe drinking water that all city residents and businesses need, and there is capacity in the new facility for the city to grow in the coming years.
Apart from these two major projects, a new restaurant is under construction downtown, and other buildings and building improvements are underway or will soon be going in different locations. Even Tom Laing Park is seeing an improvement being put in, with a new fan deck being constructed behind the Beavers dugout.
In addition, there are some new ventures and businesses opening, some downtown and some as home-based businesses or located outside of the downtown.
Taken altogether, all of these projects, businesses and services are adding to the local economy, and improving the city overall as a good place to live and to work and raise a family.
This all reinforces the standing that Weyburn has held in the last couple of years as the “best place to live” on the Prairies, and one of the best in all of Canada.
This shouldn’t be taken for granted, because not every community has what we have in this city, and what we have going on. We need to be thankful, first of all, for the amenities and services we have and are going to have, and secondly, we need to be supportive, both of the city and what they’re doing, and of the business community, which is the backbone of Weyburn’s economy.
