Graduation is one step in the journey of life

The end of secondary schooling seems like the end of a long journey to some, but in many ways it’s only the beginning for students graduating from the Weyburn Comprehensive or from the other high schools in the area.

The end of secondary schooling seems like the end of a long journey to some, but in many ways it’s only the beginning for students graduating from the Weyburn Comprehensive or from the other high schools in the area.
The first part of the journey is what is being celebrated now, which began from the start of schooling in kindergarten through the elementary grades, junior then senior high.
There’s been a lot of learning along the way as the students grew up, and now they are on the verge of adulthood — a daunting and sometimes scary prospect, but also very exciting.
There will be a lot of words of advice given at graduation ceremonies, and words about chasing dreams and aspirations, but first of all, the graduates should consider what they have accomplished and learned over the past 13 or so years.
There were lessons of life, especially in the first few years of elementary school, along with learning all about reading and writing, and in the higher grades, also about science and math.
Students learned (hopefully) about getting along with others, about how to read and to study, about how to be a team player in the classroom or in sports, or in groups.
There’s truth in the saying that “everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten”, such as about manners, being nice and sharing, taking turns and having a nap once in a while.
These are important lessons to keep in mind as students face the rest of their lives. There are hopes and plans for more schooling, hopefully at college, university or technical school, while some will work for a year before deciding to take the plunge into post-secondary education.
Aside from academic considerations, young adults have their entire lives in front of them, so much to do, so much to experience and so much they want to accomplish.
Some have hopes of eventually finding love and settling down with a family, while others want to pursue a passion or career and see where it takes them — and to be fair, there are some who really have no idea of what they want to do or who they want to be.
That’s all right too, because it’s all part of the journey of life, and as one goes out into the world to meet new people, see new places and have new experiences. There is much that can be learned just in living one’s life to the fullest. An important principle to keep in mind, regardless of how one sets out, is to be honest, kind, and to always have integrity in one’s dealings with others. Try your best, never stop learning, and never turn down an opportunity to have fun — and above all, be true to yourself.
