Let your spirit of giving shine forth

There are a number of fundraisers ongoing in Weyburn and area right now, and some of them are intended to help people in very heart-breaking circumstances — but this is where the Weyburn area excels, as they have so many times in the past.

There are a number of fundraisers ongoing in Weyburn and area right now, and some of them are intended to help people in very heart-breaking circumstances — but this is where the Weyburn area excels, as they have so many times in the past.

In one instance, a gofundme page has been set up for Jasmine Ozmun, a mother of four children, who is battling Stage 4 renal cell carcinoma, a kidney cancer that is affecting her bones and lymph nodes.

The response from the community has been very generous so far, including a special hockey game where two minor hockey teams faced off against each other with the express purpose of raising money for the family. They raised $550, in addition to the money they raised for Hockey Fights Cancer.

Ozmun is in Mexico receiving treatment right now, with the hopes of being home for Christmas with her family.

In another fundraising effort, Mike and Cara Weger once again held their Big Butter Tart Bake for Cystic Fibrosis on Tuesday, in support of research into finding a cure or better treatment for CF.

Their daughter Teresa, who’s 14, was diagnosed with this disease at the age of two and a half, and the Wegers have been championing the cause of raising funds and awareness ever since.

As a special note to the butter tart fundraiser this year, they have announced they will commit a portion of the funds raised to help Jasmine Ozmun and her family.

Another fundraising effort is coming on Sunday, as the Midget AA John Hulbert Construction Wings is holding “Pack the Rink” with the aim to raise money for their teammate, No. 7, Cooper Walbaum.

He is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, so his team wants to pitch in and help out, with the admission and the proceeds from the 50/50 to go towards helping Walbaum and his family. The game will get underway at 2:45 p.m. at Crescent Point Place.

In addition, there is a website set up selling T-shirts andhoodies, at Play4Coop.com, again with the proceeds to help out the family.

It is true there are a great many needs in the community right now, with the Salvation Army food bank as one example of a need for support, but the residents of Weyburn and area have shown time and time again how generous they are when there is a real need. This is truly a time to show the real spirit of giving at Christmas.
