Nominate a worthy person or business today

Weyburn This Week editorial

There are many worthy individuals, groups and businesses in Weyburn and area who ought to be recognized for the contributions that they make to the community.

Most, if not all, of these people do not seek out recognition or awards, and as many volunteers will tell you, that’s not why they do what they do — but when a person or a business gives of themselves to help out others, or go above and beyond to serve or to provide services to those who need it, their efforts ought to be recognized.

The recognition can help inspire others to volunteer, or to give, or to serve in some capacity in a service group or organization, or just generally in the life of the community.

There are numerous ways that recognition can be given. Nominations have just opened for the Quota International of Weyburn’s Women of the Year Awards, which is marking their 20th anniversary.

They have four categories where deserving women can be recognized for their contributions: workplace excellence, community service, exceptional entrepreneur and young woman of distinction.

Think of the women in your life, and consider what they do, day in and day out, and who they help and how they give to those around them.

The deadline for these nominations is Friday, March 6, only a month away.

For those in the business community, nominations for the WEYBEX Awards are open in five categories from the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce.

The categories include business leader of the year, new or expanded business, community involvement, golden service and the Business Hall of Fame.

Weyburn is blessed to have an active and vibrant business community, and there are many ways that the best of the best can be recognized for what they do in their business ventures, and in how they serve their customers and the community at large, whether it’s the business owners or their staff (or both).

The deadline for the WEYBEX Awards is April 1.

Another award that could be considered is the Junior Citizen of the Year Award, a provincial award (with a number of recipients) sponsored by the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, which the Weyburn This Week and Weyburn Review are longtime members of.

There are many remarkable young people in the community, and it would be good to recognize what they do. Some of the traits looked for include having a positive lifestyle, the ability to overcome life’s challenges, a sense of caring and responsibility, dedicated to the community and school, and one who inspires others. The candidate has to be between the ages of eight and 18, and the deadline is March 31.
