So who needs the Grey Cup?

My Nikkel's Worth column

Oh the dilemma, the indecision, of what to do this weekend.

The Grey Cup has always been one of those major championship sporting events that I love to watch for the sheer spectacle of it, and most times for the competition of the football game.

I have to wonder if I’ll even bother to watch it this year, as the Green and White who should’ve been able to make it there will in fact not be playing for the silver-coloured trophy.

All Rider Nation had their hearts broken in the Western Final as their hero, Cody Fajardo, failed in two attempts in a row to score a touchdown to at least tie the game at the end.

Many people will be at the game, or will be watching it, because it’s the thing to do. One thing that’s always impressed me about the Grey Cup are the representations from all of the football clubs, because this is a celebration of Canadian football as a sport.

It’s a little harder to do when the team that beat ours is representing the West. I might have to do the unthinkable, and cheer for the Eastern team, the Hamilton Tiger Cats — but that just doesn’t seem right either.

I could always take the road that my daughters do and ignore the game, and watch Netflix instead, or Disney+.

I know of certain Disney fans who got the streaming service right away, and have been binging out on Disney movies, and that is certainly an option too, or to check out the suite of Star Wars movies and series, like The Mandalorian (which I know many Star Wars fans have already been checking out).

Speaking of movies, there are some new ones that a person could go out to see. The aforementioned Disney fans will want to see Frozen 2, not to mention the Maleficent sequel.

On a more serious note, some of the films which have caught my eye include The Good Liar, where we can see “Gandalf” actor Ian McKellen along with Helen Mirren.

There’s a new version of Midway. I remember as a teenager going to the original one, and being impressed by the scope of the film and the special effects (such as they were).

My need for sci-fi can be met with the new Will Smith movie, Gemini Man, where he plays both his own character and a younger clone of himself.

For fans of legendary film director Martin Scorcese, The Irishman is just coming out with Joe Pesci and Robert de Niro. The beauty of this movie is it’s on Netflix, so I can watch it at home and not have to drive to Regina to see it at a theatre. There are movies you really need to see on the big screen, like the next Star Wars movie that will be out in December. Meanwhile … go Ti-Cats! Beat the Blue Bombers!
