Support Communithon, a great cause

My Nikkel's Worth column

A great tradition will carry on in Weyburn later this week, as on Friday, Oct. 25, starting at 8 a.m., this year’s Communithon fundraiser will begin.

By tradition, this event had been held at the Legion Hall in downtown Weyburn for many years before it was moved to the Weyburn Comp School, where it graced the stage in the Cugnet Centre for a number of years.

Now, the Communithon is back at the Legion, and the organizing committee has adopted the theme of “A Blast From the Past” to encourage residents to remember the “good old days” of when the event used to be held there.

One main difference from the historic version of Communithon is this year’s event will only be held on one day, where it used to be a 33-hour telethon. This will compress the time available for local entertainers to take the stage, but this also means the best-of-the-best will be providing great quality performances on the stage.

This includes the bands and singing groups from the schools, which is always a highlight of this event every year.

Generations of students in Weyburn carry the memory of going up on stage with their classmates and singing or playing in front of an appreciative audience of parents, grandparents and community members, and this tradition will continue on.

Then, starting at 3 p.m. and continuing until the end at 11 p.m., talented performers of all kinds from the community will take to the stage, including singers, musicians, dancers, and community groups and choirs.

The Rotary Club of Weyburn will be singing, as they have done all through the history of the Communithon, which is in itself a great tradition.

When Communithon used to be held over two days, the Rotary choir would then head to the pancake breakfast afterward, because for some reason the group was always scheduled for some really early hour on the Saturday.

The pancake breakfast is no longer available, unfortunately, but the perogy and smokie supper is still on at McKenna Hall, put on by the Knights of Columbus and Prairie Sky Co-op, and they will be showing the Communithon live on a big screen.

This is always a popular venue that is part of the Communithon tradition, and is worthy of the support of as many residents as possible, as is Communithon itself. For those who don’t get Access, they can come down to the Legion and watch the entertainment live, and give their donation towards the 11 community agencies in person. Enjoy the entertainment, and support the community agencies — it’s all for the benefit of all residents of Weyburn and area.
