One of the shortest but best seasons of the year is starting in earnest, as school is done, Canada Day is upon us and then we have the summer months of July and August.
These are sometimes known as “road construction season”, but for those willing to overlook the work on our roads and highways, this is a great time of year to get outside and enjoy the facilities, parks and amenities of our community, and beauty of our country.
Parents might say this is the “Mom, I’m bored” season, as the children whine about “nothing to do” since school’s done.
The first thing to note is that as of Sunday, July 11, all restrictions will be lifted in Saskatchewan, including the requirement to wear masks, to physically distance, to watch how many people gather in one place, etc.
Secondly, there are numerous programs and activities set up for children and families to be involved in, such as the City’s summer art program and Fun in the Sun program.
For certain groups, Inclusion Weyburn has a summer program, and Family Place has its Sunny Scholars program.
The Weyburn Canoe and Kayak Club has a series of camps during the summer out at Nickle Lake, with a number of those camps filling up quickly.
Aside from those activities, the Weyburn Ag Society will have the Weyburn Fair on July 15-18, including rides, concessions and the demo derby. A number of communities are putting together plans for their fairs, such as the Souris Valley Antique Association’s threshing demo and heritage village in Midale at the end of July.
There is the outdoor pool in Weyburn, two water spray parks, plus Nickle Lake Regional Park and Mainprize Regional Park in the area, and parks throughout the area and province for families to travel to and enjoy.
The Tatagwa Parkway trails around Weyburn are open and available at all times for walking, running or cycling, and the skateboard park at the Weyburn Youth Centre provides an excellent facility for those who enjoy scooters, bikes and skateboards.
In short, there is lots to do and see, and with the restrictions about to go away, the summer is open to us to enjoy.
