Welcome to Weyburn, a real Christmastown!

Weyburn This Week editorial

Weyburn is a community that loves Christmas, and could maybe even adopt a seasonal motto, “Welcome to Christmastown” or something similar during the month of December.

The list of events, concerts and attractions that go on around Christmas is amazing, and some of the most memorable events have just occurred or began to get the season started.

The Festival of Trees auction of decorated Christmas trees has become an annual tradition for Weyburn, plus it raised an amazing $48,000 for the Family Place. This was followed by the Carol Festival on Sunday, with two great performances, and then Weyburn Tourism opened their inaugural River Park Sparkles venue.

The really great part about this new venture is it will be on every night from now through to January 4, with Christmas light displays throughout Weyburn’s premiere camping park during the season when it normally is dormant after a successful summer season.

It will be a great addition to the Twinkle Tour, which will again be taking place on Dec. 12, with a bus chartered to take residents around to see all the Christmas light displays at homes and businesses. If the bus doesn’t take people there, it’s worth the trip to spend an evening strolling through River Park.

Speaking of lights, the Parade of Lights will be winding its way through downtown Weyburn tonight, Dec. 5, starting at 7 p.m., and if the weather holds, it will be one of the mildest versions of this event ever.

The weekend has yet more Christmas events going on, including the Ten Thousand Villages craft sale, the Variations Community Choir’s Christmas concerts on Saturday and Sunday, and Skating with Santa at the Sports Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Cookies, Carols and Cards event at the Weyburn Public Library will be held on Monday night, Dec. 9, and the junior high choir and band concert will be the next night, Dec. 10, at the Comp, with the senior choir and band concert a week later on Dec. 17. All of the schools will be having their Christmas concerts in December, many of them in the last week of school before the break.

One of the best Christmas attractions ever is coming back to Weyburn on Monday, Dec. 16, namely the CP Holiday Train. Not only is the train itself worth checking out, but there is usually great entertainment on the train’s stage, and there are donations of food and money to the Salvation Army for the food bank.

This last point is an important reminder about the “reason for the season”, namely that to be giving is the best way to honour the real spirit of the holiday. Don’t forget about those less fortunate, some of whom will not be celebrating much, unless we as a community step up to support them and give.
