The Weyburn Comp Eagles senior boys basketball team won the gold medals for the Len Williams Memorial Classic tournament, hosted on Friday and Saturday at the Eagle gym. The senior boys defeated Oxbow in the quarter-finals, Humboldt in the semi-finals, and then they beat Moose Jaw Peacock in the final to take home the gold. Photos are from the Eagles game against Oxbow. The Weyburn Comprehensive School (WCS) Eagles have taken the lead over the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs in the annual McLeod Series basketball showdown between the two teams. The teams split their games Wednesday night in Estevan, with the Eagles boys winning their game 96-78 and WCS girls losing 80-78. Weyburn holds a 174-158 advantage in point differential, which will be the tie-breaker if each team wins twice in the best-of-four showdown. The Eagles and the Elecs were tied 33-33 midway through the second quarter of the senior boys games, but then Weyburn took over, outscoring Estevan 17-4 to lead 50-37 at half-time. The Eagles continued to dominate into the third quarter to lead by 23 at one point. Estevan cut the deficit to a dozen points, but never drew closer, thanks in part to a buzzer-beating three-point shot for the Eagles at the end of the third quarter. The senior girls game, meanwhile, had the excitement, lead changes, intensity and crowd energy one would expect from the McLeod Series. The Eagles opened with an 11-4 run, but Estevan fought back and led 22-21 after the first quarter. The Elecs extended the lead to 27-21 in the second quarter, but Weyburn responded, and the game was tied 42-42 at half-time. The wild momentum changes continued into the third quarter. Estevan built a 59-55 lead late in the third, but Weyburn knocked down back-to-back three-point shots to lead after three. The Eagles led 76-67 late in the fourth, but Estevan went on a 13-2 run to finish the game and earn the split. The final two games in the series will be played tonight, Feb. 12, in Weyburn, with the senior girls up first at 5:30 p.m. and the senior boys playing at 7:30 in the Eagle gym. The WCS Eagles Junior A boys basketball team went to Moose Jaw on the weekend for a tournament at Palliser school. On Friday, the Eagles faced the home team and came up just short with a 43-34 loss. They faced the Moose Jaw Westmount team on Saturday. The Eagles came back from being down by 12 at one point and cruised in the fourth quarter, pulling off a 43-37 victory to put them into the B final. In the B final the boys were up against the Swift Current Irwin squad. After a dominating first quarter which saw them with a 13-0 lead, Irwin fought back to tie the game before the half. Keeping the fans on the edge of their seats right until the last whistle, the Eagles came away with a 40-38 win to capture the B side.
