Saskatoon dad recalls scary scene after Bouwmeester collapses at son's hockey game

SASKATOON — The Saskaton father of a St. Louis Blues player says he was sitting next to defenceman Jay Bouwmeester's dad when Bouwmeester collapsed on the bench during a National Hockey League game Tuesday night in Anaheim.

Jeff Schenn, who was watching his son Brayden Schenn play as part of the Blues' annual dads trip, told Saskatoon radio station CKOM that he saw a commotion on the team's bench and thought there was a fight or that someone had jumped in from the stands.

The dads had no idea at first that a player had collapsed.

Schenn says he could see his son, but Dan Bouwmeester couldn't find his.

Twenty seconds later, Schenn says Dan Bouwmeester said, 'I think it's Jay' and took off to go check on him.

The team says the 36-year-old defenceman, who is from Edmonton, suffered a cardiac episode and was taken to hospital where he was conscious and alert Tuesday night.

Schenn said it was amazing to watch everyone jump into action.

"They have team doctors who sit right behind the Anaheim bench. (Ducks star) Ryan Getzlaf had a doctor over there in seconds," he said. "As bad as it was, it really couldn't happen in a better place. (Bouwmeester) had so much care in front of him."

Scheen said Jay Bouwmeester was in good spirits and even cracking jokes with his Blues' teammates afterward.

"Jay FaceTimed the boys after, just saying he was OK," Schenn said.

"It's scary for anybody that gets involved. (It's) a good teammate right in front of you. Some boys were having a tough time with it."

The NHL has pages of emergency medical standards that spell out in specific detail that at least two doctors must be in attendance for every game and one must be within 50 feet of the bench.

A defibrillator must be available, along with a triage room and ambulances.
