The Weyburn Beavers have started their season with a strong showing, winning eight games in a row to remain undefeated, as of press deadlines on Tuesday morning. The Beavers will finish the second part of a back-and-back home series against Fort McMurray tonight, June 13, at Tom Laing Park.

In recent games, the Beavers won 6-2 over the Regina Red Sox on June 7, then won 3-2 and 8-7 against the Melville Millionaires on June 8 and 9, and recently won 8-7 against the Yorkton Cardinals on June 10 and captured a 12-6 win over the Regina Red Sox on June 11.

It is a good feeling to have that strong start and to be playing for the Weyburn Beavers for first-time players Omar Prieto and Reid Wall.

“There is a good fan base here, and I love it so far,” said Prieto. “It feels great to start off with a win, and we have been playing well and getting the chemistry down.”

“I really enjoyed playing at Tom Laing Park and hearing the energy of the crowd,” added Prieto. “So far all the teams have been competing, and it has not been easy to win the ball games. But I think it will be like that for the rest of the season, and each team will compete day in and day out.”

“I have never been to Canada, so it is really nice being here, and getting to play summer baseball,” said Wall. “We have a good team and a good fan base, so it is an exciting way to start the season.”

“The competition that we have faced have been strong, and we have been lucky to win every game so far. We hope to continue that, but it is a strong competitive season,” added Wall. “We are definitely focused on earning a league ring this season, so we are keeping that as our main goal.”

Cam Williams was recently awarded the Western Major Baseball League’s Pitcher of the Week, for the period of May 31 to June 8.
