Challenger Baseball is a new program to Weyburn. It is an adaptive baseball program designed to empower children and youth living with cognitive and/or physical disabilities.

Only 56 per cent of children and youth living with mental and physical disabilities are participating in sport, play and recreation, compared to 87 per cent of those living without a disability. Only 12 per cent of children with autism spectrum disorder are physically active, pursuing mostly solitary forms of play. Challenger Baseball carefully weaves physical activity with life-skill development all through the great game of baseball.

Coaches, volunteers and buddies are the key to a successful program. As the numbers grow, the program will always be in need of more volunteers. As a coach or volunteer, the most important role with Challenger Baseball is to lead a fun, safe, consistent and effective program.

This year, Challenger Baseball runs on Sundays throughout May and June from 1-2 p.m. on diamond 4 at Jubilee Park, which has been donated by Weyburn Minor Ball Association.

Challenger Baseball is offered to all school-age children at no cost to their family or caregiver, and Home Hardware is the jersey sponsor. The program is funded by donations, sponsorship and fundraising.

The only fundraiser this year is a turkey or beef supper Friday, June 15, at the Weyburn Legion. Cocktails start at 5:30 p.m. and supper is at 7 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided by Lizzie Frank Lynn Band. There will be a silent auction throughout the evening and organizers have already received lots of donations from local businesses.
