The Weyburn Beavers saw their record-breaking 16-game win streak come to an end over the weekend, but on Tuesday night they resumed with a win to remain undefeated at home this season.

To start off the weekend, the Beavers were supposed to play a home-and-home series against the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Friday and Saturday. However, both games were postponed due to the rain and were rescheduled as doubleheaders on July 14th and August 4th.

On Sunday, they travelled to Swift Current to face the 57’s. At the top of the first, Garrett Perez found the opportunity to steal third and because of an error made by the third baseman, he was able to get the Beavers up on the board.

The top of the third saw Justin Summers hit a single to centre field which allowed Perez and Tyler Scott to come home. With Summers on third and Jack Barrie at first, Dominic Bravo hit a single to right field that brought Summers home. Marcus Catalano was next up to bat and allowed Barrie to score by hitting a single to centre field.

The Beavers seemed pretty secure with a score of 5-0 quite early in the game, but then things went downhill. Between a two-man home run, a three-man home run and a run earned due to a wild pitch, the 57’s were up 6-5 by the bottom of the fourth. The rest of the game was played with almost playoff-like intensity, but no more points were put up by either team, and the 57’s walked away with the win.

They Weyburn Beavers had a break on Monday, but got back into the swing of things on Tuesday night with a home game win against the Yorkton Cardinals.

Early in the top of the first, the Cardinals got one run in, but the Beavers quickly answered back in the bottom of the second with six guys finding home base. Dominic Sere had a pretty successful night hitting a sacrifice fly to centre field to allow Catalano to come home in the bottom of the third. He also hit a three-run dinger in the bottom of the fifth.

The King of Home Runs, Barrie, did not disappoint as in the bottom of the sixth he sent one over the fence. Dario Gomez snagged the last point of the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth making the final score 12-3.

On Thursday, they started a three-game home series against the Edmonton Prospects, with all games starting at 7:05 p.m. at Tom Laing Park.

In other Beavers news, the Collegiate Summer Baseball National Rankings came out on Monday and the Weyburn Beavers were fortunate enough to once again make the Top 25, this time holding on to the 18th spot. In a Twitter post made by the Weyburn Beavers organization they said, “Our organization works hard to put a quality product on the field and the recognition is appreciated.”
