Weyburn-born NFL player Brett Jones was released by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, and he is now a free agent.

The centre was acquired by the Vikings in August 2018 after he played for the New York Giants, signing with that team as a free agent in February of 2015.

He played in 14 games with the Vikings, and with the Giants, he played in 30 games, starting in 14 of them.

Prior to his NFL career, he played for two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders for two seasons.

His CFL career included being named the CFL’s Outstanding Rookie Award in 2013, and the CFL’s Outstanding Lineman Award in 2014, as well as being named an All-Star both years.

He started his football in Weyburn, and played for the Comp Eagles, helping them win the City Championships in 2007 and 2008 before playing for four seasons with the Regina Rams.

He was drafted in the second round by the Stampeders in 2013.
