The Weyburn Senior Girls basketball team has finished tryouts and travelled to Indian Head for some opening season action over the weekend.

The team won all three games, beating Indian Head 62-30, Southey 60-35, and Regina Johnson 83-50.

The team has five returning Grade 12 players, and one returning Grade 11 player, who were all fantastic leaders this weekend. Alyssa Romanovitch, Hailey Neiszner, Jill Labatte, Meagan Dutchak, Caroline Manning, and Grade 11 player Arliss Sidloski all contributed to the wins on offense, as well as helping the six new players figure out the offense/defense.

The six new players consist of five Grade 10s, including Grace Labatte, Brynn Romanovitch, Banner Guenther, Rese King and Jaelyn Paulhus, and one player from Grade 9, Denae King.

The six newest members showed excellent potential and worked hard all weekend, proving why they deserved to be on the team.

Karly Johnson has returned for another year as head coach with some new help on the bench in the form of assistant coach Tiarrah Umbach, and manager Brianna Swyryda.

This weekend the senior girls are participating in the Saskatoon Bowl Classic 32-team tournament from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

The WCS Senior Boys basketball team, coached by Lars Guenther, also travelled to Indian Head to kick off their 2018-19 season.

They defeated Southey 91-78, defeated FW Johnson 89-38 and Indian Head 73-62 to go undefeated on the weekend.
