Football, soccer, high school sports face uncertainty this fall

Weyburn Minor Football will be proceeding with a season this fall, but it is unknown what form that season might take.

“We have had to change our approach to start-up due to COVID-19 this year. We have chosen a staggered start to help reduce large group gatherings and close proximity of kids and parents,” said Minor Football president Ryan Maloney.

The U14 Youngfellows Falcons had equipment pickup and conditioning last week and a mini-camp this past Saturday. The U12 PAR Contracting Ravens (shown in the photos above) started with conditioning and Equipment pickup on Monday night, and the U10 Apex Cardinals will have equipment pickup and introduction to football next week.

“As for competition, we do not yet know what will be allowed by the Saskatchewan Health Authority. All centres participating in the Moose Jaw Minor Football League have committed to holding a season and adapting to what ever type of competition is allowed by the province,” said Maloney, adding that it is yet to be seen what might be allowed, such as regular league play, mini-leagues or scrimmages within Weyburn.

“We are working hard as an organization and as volunteers to provide a fun and safe activity for the kids and provide some sense of structure and normalcy in these uncertain times,” he said.

For Weyburn Minor Soccer, their Little Kicks program held their final session of the summer on Tuesday evening, and other age groups are done on Thursday, but coach Tyler Hillstead noted they will do soccer practices at Jubilee Park on week nights through the fall until the snow falls.

He noted they have been unsuccessful so far in lining up a venue for indoor soccer, and it may not happen this winter unless the school divisions change their minds to allow them to rent gym space again.

At the Weyburn Comprehensive School, the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) has pushed back start dates for fall sports.

Golf has been cancelled outright, while soccer, cross country and football will now have a Sept. 28 start date, and volleyball has a start date of Oct. 13.

With the late date for high school soccer, Hillstead is hopeful of having practices for them through September until they are able to start up.

“Our school division has not made any decisions about athletics and extra curr as of today, but we hope to get more direction in the next few days as we teachers return to work,” said Jody Kerr of the WCS athletics department.
