A player for the Red team reached for the puck on a scoring attempt during the Red-and-White game, held at the end of the fall training camp for the Weyburn Red Wings on Monday afternoon at Crescent Point Place. The Red team won the exhibition game 3-0. The game was the last chance for Red Wing hopefuls to impress the coaching staff before the preseason and regular season get underway for the Junior A hockey club.

The goals were scored by Taylor Haibgewachs, Tyson Mclean and Colton Nikiforuk, with assists made by Rhett Frey, Haibgewachs and John Lee.

Head coach Rich Pilon was overall very impressed with the game play he saw this weekend, especially in the intersquad games.

“We kind of played intersquad games three days in a row so you see a little bit of tiredness today, and they lost a little bit of that jump, but overall I’m very pleased with the effort. There’s a lot of guys that made decisions harder for us, which is what we wanted, and now it’s just a matter of going into the exhibition season and seeing which guys are going to separate themselves from the other guys.”

The first preseason game for the Red Wings was on the road in Estevan on Tuesday against the Bruins. The team will have home ice advantage on Sept. 4 against the Yorkton Terriers. They remain at home on Friday, Sept. 6, for their game against the Notre Dame Hounds, and the roles reverse on Saturday for the Red Wings final preseason game. All of those games start at 7:30 p.m.

“I think anytime you’re playing Estevan, obviously there’s a big rivalry here. You know putting the lineup in, I think we want guys just to see where they are going to be at now playing against competition. Throughout training camp, even though we had two teams, there are a lot of friends on each side and now you’re going into a game where you don’t have to let off, which will happen when you’re playing against people you know,” said Pilon about what he’s looking for from the guys during the preseason games, specifically against Estevan.
