The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings took to the ice for the first time Monday night since breaking for holidays, and to put things lightly, the Red Wings were rusty.

For the first game back, the Red Wings hosted the Estevan Bruins for the annual home-and-home Tom Huston Classic Series.

By then end of the first period, the Bruins led 1-0, but with two quick goals just minutes apart in the second period, the Bruins went ahead by three.

At the 10:33 mark in the second, Joseph Young was injured and pulled from net with Noah Decottignies replacing him.

Just before the 15-minute mark, Daytona Houle scored an unassisted goal to finally get the Wings on the board.

Not all hope was lost as a two-goal comeback was definitely doable, but the third period was to say the least, a train wreck.

Between the 8:19 mark until the 15:39 mark, the Bruins were scoring machines, while the Red Wings just weren’t there at all.

The final buzzer put an end to the madness and the Red Wings took the 7-1 defeat.

Finals shots were 43-20 for the Bruins and the three stars were given to Tyler Savage with the third, Houle with the second and Griffin Asham-Moroz with the first.

The Red Wings and Bruins will have a rematch on New Year’s Day in the afternoon in Estevan to continue the Tom Huston Classic, at Affinity Place.

The Red Wings next game will be at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. against the Melville Millionaires.
