The Weyburn Red Wings had a busy weekend February 6 and 7.

In addition to playing games on both Friday and Saturday evening, the team hosted celebrations each night.

On February 6, the Wings played host to the Humboldt Broncos. Although the Broncos took home the win with a 4-1 finish, the real winners on the ice that night were the Red Wing players’ parents and billets.

Before Friday’s game, parents and billets of the team were introduced and thanked for all the support they show the players throughout the year. In addition, part one of a two-night auction took place. Friday evening 12 player jerseys were auctioned off, with some hitting as high as $1,000.00.

Each player’s jersey had a commemorative patch honouring the 2005 RBC Champion Red Wing team. As each jersey was auctioned off, the player took to the ice wearing it for all the fans to see.

Saturday night saw the Red Wings and fans celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the Weyburn Red Wings’ gold medal win at the Royal Bank Cup. In 2005, the Weyburn Red Wings both hosted and won the 35th National Junior "A" tournament, the Royal Bank Cup. That year, the Red Wings beat out the Camrose Kodiaks in the final with a 3-2 finish.

As part of the celebrations on Saturday evening, alumni from the 2005 team were introduced on the ice. A video highlighting the tournament’s most memorable moments was played on the big screen before the game against the Nipawin Hawks. During period intermissions, the second half of the jersey auction took place. The 12 remaining jerseys from the current team were successfully sold.

The Red Wings have more events planned for the remainder of the season, including a post-game shoot-out Calcutta on February 21.
