The Weyburn Red Wings announced that right-winger Cade Kowalski was named as the SJHL’s Rookie of the Year, with split results in their weekend games.
Kowalski, who hails from Morden, Man., is the Wings leading scorer currently at No. 15 in the SJHL, with 10 goals and 48 assists for 58 points.
Just behind him is Ben Hiltz, who has 28 goals and 27 assists for 55 points. Weyburn is in second place in the Viterra Division with 62 points, behind Estevan with 69 points.
The Bruins clinched the division title, even with a loss in Weyburn on Friday night by the score of 5-4. Overall in the SJHL, Nipawin is the top team with 89 points, and tied for second are Melfort and the Battlefords with 84 points each.
In Friday’s game, the teams came out of the first period with the Bruins leading 3-2, and the visitors added another goal in the second. The Wings goals were by Ty Brown and Erik Olson.
Down 4-2 in the third, the Red Wings mounted their comeback with two goals to tie the game, with goals by Olson and Ben Hiltz, and Hiltz scored the game-winner with just over a minute left in the game.
Goaltender Arik Weersink was between the pipes for the Red Wings, making 22 saves on 26 shots.
The Notre Dame Hounds visited the Red Wings at Crescent Point Place on Saturday night, and won by the score of 5-4.
Weyburn had a strong start to the game, with two goals by Cole Woodliffe and one by Mike Eskra in the first period. Woodliffe made it a hat trick in the second period, but it wasn’t enough as Notre Dame scored the winning goal in the third.
Weersink was again in net, making 29 saves on 34 shots.
The Red Wings held their Calcutta shootout competition after the Bruins game on Friday evening, and Connor Pyne emerged as the eventual winner.
The Red Wings final game of the regular season will be on the road, as they travel to Yorkton on Friday evening to take on the Terriers.
