The Weyburn Red Wings will bring back their reading program for elementary students, with Top-Notch Towing as the new sponsor for this year.
Ryan Williams of Top-Notch was formerly the president of the Red Wings when the program was initially sponsored by Cenovus Energy, and he felt the program was a valuable one for children and for the team, so he wants to bring it back.
The program will kick off on Thursday, Nov. 16, at Assiniboia Park Elementary School, when a group of eight players will visit the school and read books to the students, and will then leave the books with the school.
“It’s a nice way to give back to the community, as well as to support literacy,” said Williams, noting the books are supplied by Hockey Canada, and will relate to the value of sports and healthy lifestyles for children.
“It’s a nice tie-in with the hockey team in a way they can relate, and the kids can relate to the players,” said Williams.
“I’ve been a big supporter of it right from the word go. Literacy is such a huge part of kids education,” he added.
The Red Wings are set to visit St. Michael School on Nov. 23, Queen Elizabeth School on Jan. 16, and Souris School on Feb. 6, with Haig School to set a date soon.
