Team West takes lead at Esso Cup

After the first six games of the 2016 Esso Cup, the Saskatoon Stars, who are representing Team West, have taken a 2-0 lead. The Stars won 2-0 in their first game on Sunday night, winning against the host Weyburn Gold Wings.

Anna Leschyshyn (Saskatoon) and Abby Shirley (Deslisle) scored the goals and Emma Johnson (Saskatoon) earned the shutout.
Then on Monday afternoon, the Stars improved their record after winning 4-2 over the Express du Richeliue. Leschyshyn scored two goals for the Stars, with Kianna Dietz and Grace Shirley scoring the other two.
The host Weyburn Gold Wings have had a difficult start to the 2016 Esso Cup. After losing their first game to the Saskatoon Stars, they fell 4-2 to the Brantford Ice Cats on Monday evening.
Maeve McGauley and Jenna Grube opened up scoring for the Gold Wings. Then Kayla Bailey notched the first goal for the Ice Cats. Nicole Kelly secured the win for the Ice Cats with a hat trick.

Metro Boston Pizza represents Team Atlantic, the Brantford Ice Cats represent Team Ontario, the Rocky Mountain Raiders represent Team Pacific and Express Du Richeliue represent Team Quebec.
The Express du Richeliue won the opening game of the 2016 Esso Cup 1-0 over the Metro Boston Pizza. Katyanna Lebrun’s goal in the second period was all the offense that the Express du Richeliue needed to win.
In a matchup between two Esso Cup rookie teams, the Rocky Mountain Raiders won 2-1 over the Brantford Ice Cats in the second game of the Esso Cup tournament. Hailey McCallum scored two goals 2:10 apart early in the second period to lift her team to the win.
In the first game for Monday’s action, the Metro Boston Pizza won 2-0 over the Rocky Mountain Raiders. Kira Mernet and Jenna Pellerin scored the goals, while goaltender Terra Lanteigne picked up the shutout.
Tuesday’s game action include Team West against Team pacific, Team Atlantic against Team Ontario, and the host Weyburn Gold Wings facing up against Team Quebec.
Esso Cup action today, April 20, will include Team Ontario against Team West at noon, Team Quebec against Team Pacific at 3:50 p.m., and the host Gold Wings facing Team Atlantic at 7 p.m.
The round robin games will continue on Thursday, April 21. The semifinal games of the Esso Cup will be held Friday, April 22, and the bronze and gold medal games will be held Saturday, April 23.
