A large karate tournament will be hosted by Vilcu’s Karate Klub on Saturday, March 28, at the Weyburn Comp’s Eagle gym.

As founder and sensei Harold Vilcu is going to be retiring after 40 years, organizers are hoping to bring in clubs from Alberta, Manitoba and the U.S. along with Saskatchewan clubs.

Action is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m., and will be on throughout the day, with plans for around 150 competitors to attend.

Plans include greetings from Mayor Marcel Roy, and a lion dance by a group from Alberta to formally open the day’s competition.

Harold’s son Isaac, a black belt instructor, will continue to run the Weyburn club, and an Estevan club will also continue to operate. The Weyburn club meets for classes every Tuesday evening in the basement of McKenna Hall.

There are plans for a reception for Harold Vilcu after the tournament wraps up to celebrate his 40 years of organizing and teaching karate in southeast Saskatchewan.

There were seven students in Vilcu’s first class, held at the Midale School.
