The Weyburn Canoe and Kayak Club will be holding summer youth camps, and an athlete training program, at Nickle Lake this summer, with many of the spots in the youth camp already filled.

The summer youth camps provide children with an introduction to paddling, focusing on basic skills and water safety.

There are six one-week camps set for this summer, and sessions will run Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., from the week of July 5-9 to Aug. 16-20.

Each week of camp will cost $100, and each camp is limited to 12 children per session.

There will be time spent on the water, as well as at the beach, paddling pool and playground.

The athlete training program is aimed at children aged 12 to 16, and aims to provide more advanced training and knowledge of canoeing and kayaking.

The focus is on teaching and improving skills in preparation for the Saskatchewan Summer Games, with time spent on the water doing longer paddles, racing and other activities and games to improve skills and endurance.

This program will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, and will run from July 6 to Aug. 21.

COVID precautions will be in place and observed as long as the guidelines exist, including provision of hand sanitizer and sanitizing of all paddles and boats thoroughly before each use. Participants are urged to bring a mask to wear when physical distancing is not possible.
