Weyburn Gold Wings drop home opener to Wildcats, have home game cancelled

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings opened their regular season with a game against Swift Current on Saturday night. The schedule had planned for a home-and-home series, but unfortunately due to inclement weather the home game for the Gold Wings on Sunday afternoon was cancelled.

The Gold Wings lost 4-2 to the Swift Current Wildcats at Innovation Credit Union I-Plex. Hailey Verhelst for the Gold Wings opened scoring in the first period, with an assist from Sara Auchstaetter and Breez Classen.

Swift Current tied up the game with a powerplay goal in the second period, and then scored back-to-back goals early in the third period to take a strong lead. Ashton Bender scored the second goal of the night for the Gold Wings during a powerplay in the third period, with an assist from Dakota Bowler. Swift Current claimed their win with a goal in the final minutes of the game.

Lexi Pearce was in goal for the Gold Wings. She saved 20 shots out of 24 attempts. The Gold Wings had 16 shots on the Swift Current goal, with 14 of those being stopped by the Wildcats goaltender.

Hometown player Reece Pittman was announced as the team captain for the Gold Wings this year. Reece is in her third and final season with the Gold Wings and the team is excited to have her in a leadership role this year. Assistant captains will be announced at a later date.

In other Gold Wings news, the hockey club has announced a “Gold Rush” online 50/50 fundraiser to help with finances in this challenging season. Tickets are one for $10, 5 for $20 or 50 for $50, and the draw date will be January 15, 2021,at 10 a.m. Residents can purchase tickets at http://goldwings5050.ca and the maximum winner’s share of this 50/50 is $50,000.

The Gold Wings have another home-and-home series scheduled this weekend. They will be in Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 14, then they will host the Notre Dame Hounds at Crescent Point Place on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.

Due to public health guidelines, only 150 people will be allowed to attend the Gold Wings game in person. An online first-come first-served registration for home tickets will be posted on the Gold Wings Facebook page prior to the game.
