Fourth-year player Kate Goranson of the Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings was named the recipient of the Carol Scheibel Scholastic Player of the Year award by the Saskatchewan Female Under-18 AAA Hockey League on Wednesday.

League vice-president Jean Fauchon made the announcement online in a video on social media. He said, “It takes a lot of discipline not only to balance academics and hockey, but to excel at both.”

“Receiving this award is an honour,” said Goranson. “Playing on the Gold Wings for the past four years while maintaining a high academic average is definitely an accomplishment.”

She will be attending the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan after she graduates from the Weyburn Comprehensive School.

“I would like to give a huge thanks to my teachers, parents, and the Gold Wings organization for their support in helping me achieve this award,” said Goranson.

She added she will not be playing hockey at the U of S, but will stay involved in officiating high levels of hockey.
