Weyburn Iron Pigs trounce the Regina Ghosts

After dropping game 1 of their best-of-three series, the Iron Pigs responded with a dominating 7-1 victory at home to tie the series up at one game a piece.

Starting pitcher Eric Evans pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and striking out six batters to earn the win. Will Morris provided the offence for the Pigs with three hits and four runs batted in.

Runs were also batted in by Ketter Hoium, Evan Schultz and Adam Ziegler.

The Weyburn Iron Pigs opened the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League finals with a tough 4-3 loss in extra innings to the Regina Ghosts on Thursday night in Regina.

The Pigs grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run double off the bat of Mike Onstad, but were unable to hold the lead as Regina tied it up and then went on to score the winning run in extra innings.

Troy Miller had a hit and an RBI, Morris and Ketter Hoium each had two hits, and Garett Walbaum and Brad Weisgerber each had one hit.

Luke Niemegeers was on the mound for the Pigs for four innings, with Evans pitching in relief for three innings. Niemegeers allowed six hits, three runs and had five strike-outs, while Evans allowed two hits, one run and had two strike-outs.

The Iron Pigs will now travel to Regina Thursday night, where they will have a chance to capture the league Championship with a win.
