All teams with Weyburn Minor Football were in action at the new football field on Saturday. A number of activities and events were held throughout the day, to mark the official opening of the new field.
The Weyburn Youngfellow bantam Falcons were the first ones to play a home game on the new field. They won 34-28 against the Swift Current Steelers.
“It was a very entertaining and intense game, which was the first ever game played on the new Weyburn Minor Football field,” said Chris Michel, coach for the Falcons.
“Offensively it was our best output all season. Our offensive line played tremendously and controlled the line of scrimmage all game long,” said Michel.
“We racked up a total of 351 rushing yards, with running back Clay Gust leading the way with 164 yds rushing and two touchdowns. Quarterback Ben Michel also had two rushing touchdowns, including the first ever touchdown scored on the new field. Rohan Haupstein added one rushing touchdown as well.”
Our defense struggled a little bit at times, giving up a couple big scoring plays to Swift Current, who had a couple very good weapons on offence. This was the first time all year that our defence gave up any points, so it was bound to happen at some point.”
“Alex Lund led the defence with five tackles and one quarterback sack, but the defence did make some big stops at crucial times, which is typical of that unit, so I was happy to see that,” said Michel.
“Overall great effort from the entire team, and a huge win in a very exciting environment at the new field.”
The Weyburn Youngfellow Falcons are currently tied for first place in the bantam division of the Moose Jaw Minor Football League. They have a bye week, with their next game on October 6 in Moose Jaw against the Raiders.
The atom Weyburn DQ Junior Ravens were the next to take to the new field. They lost to Estevan 36-18.
During half time of the Ravens and Estevan game, a ceremony was held to officially turn on the lights for the first time at the new field.
In the last game of the day, both peewee Weyburn teams, the Crescent Point Eagles and the PAR Contracting Ravens, took to the field. The Ravens won 34-14.
In other football news, the Weyburn Comp Eagles won their first game of the season by a score of 41-20 over the Estevan Elecs.
Joel Niemegeers had a six yard touchdown run, Rylan Hoffman had 279 yards rushing and three touchdowns, Brett Bowler hit Skylar Patterson on a four-yard touchdown pass and Lance Palao had a 15 yard touchdown run. Thomas Goranson converted five of the six covert tries, with one getting blocked.
With a record of three losses and one win, the Eagles have a bye week to rest up. Their next game is Thursday, October 5 in Moose Jaw against the Moose Jaw Peacock.
