The Weyburn Red Wings hosted the Flin Flon Bombers on Wednesday night. This was the first time the two teams had met in Weyburn since the beginning of the season when the two teams broke out in a brawl at the end of the game.  This was also the first time Dawson McKenzie faced his former team since being traded away in early January. In exchange for McKenzie, the Bombers received the Red Wings former captain, Cade Kowalski.

The game play was intense right from the start as both teams had something to prove to one another. With just over three minutes left in the first, Ty Brown wrapped the puck behind the Bombers net right to Carson Scheschuk’s stick. With a quick touch, Scheschuk sent the puck to Drew Anderson’s forehand right in front of the net. Anderson then fired it past two Bombers defenders and their goaltender right into the netting.

The Red Wings maintained the lead late into the second until Kowalski took his revenge and tied the game. By the end of the second period, the Bombers outshot the Wings 27 to 15 so it’s extremely impressive that was the first goal that had snuck by Cody Levesque.

Three minutes and 36 seconds into the third, McKenzie showed up his former team by putting the Wings ahead. For a while it seemed like it would be the game winning goal, but nevertheless Kowalski once again tied up the game.

The game was sent into overtime, but it didn’t last very long with a Bombers goal 58 seconds in. The Red Wings undoubtedly fought hard, but in the end the Bombers took the 3-2 win.

Hoping to bounce back from that stinging loss, the Red Wings host the Notre dame Hounds tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
